The Anglo History
It all started with the incorporation of the Anglo City Property Group on March 11th 1970 – over forty years ago.
Residential development and office refurbishment provided the mainstay of the company’s activities and in 1981 Alan Burden, FRICS, joined the group to form Anglo City Properties. The headquarters of the Group was established in Winchester in September 1981 and operated from that office, known as Anglo St James House, until 2001.
The Managing Director, Alan Burden, joined from the agency practice of Goadsby & Harding (now known as Goadsby) where he was involved for 13 years, the last 4 years as one of the five equity partners.
The Winchester location enabled the company to expand its principal geographical area of operation and whilst there have been occasional projects undertaken outside of the preferred area, the main core of the business has concentrated around the M25, mainly from the M23 westwards up to the A1M, taking in principal motorway towns in the counties of Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex.
Office development either by way of single buildings or office parks, office refurbishments, industrial refurbishment and new build, leisure/A3 and some limited retail became the main area of activity. In addition small-scale, high quality residential development was undertaken.
In 1984 Park Commercial Developments plc and St James Estates plc were formed, largely at the instigation of the directors of the then named Anglo City Property Group. These two new companies specialised in the development of small office buildings and London residential, and were managed from Winchester by Anglo City Properties.
It was a natural progression to merge these three companies. Park Commercial Developments and Anglo City Property Group merged in the latter part of 1988. Anglo Park Group plc was formed and the company secured a full listing on the Stock Exchange on the 20th December 1989.
In the summer of 1991 Anglo Park Group plc merged with St James Estates plc to form Anglo St James plc.
In 1993 Anglo St James plc formed a joint venture with Lamron Estates to form Anglo Lamron plc.
In the early summer of 2000 the directors acquired the shares, not already under their control, and took the company private.
Office developments were undertaken in Bournemouth, Southampton, Winchester, Basingstoke, Fleet, Farnborough, West Byfleet, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Reigate, Redhill, Watford, St Albans, Farnham, Newbury, Hammersmith and Weybridge.
Industrial transactions featured in Aylesbury, Corby, Hartlepool, Rochester, High Wycombe, Basingstoke, Redhill, Portsmouth, Bracknell and Southampton.
Retail/A3 projects at Poole, Gosport, Lymington, Melksham, Southampton, Bournemouth, London (Oxford Street), Reading, Guildford and East Grinstead.
In 2002 the company relocated to new offices in Poole, where it has been based ever since. This relocation has further widened the geographical scope for Anglo with residential developments in the New Forest and the Poole/Bournemouth area. Since relocating to Poole, Anglo has established a new development programme with an end value in excess of £55million, mainly in offices and industrial from Bristol to Basildon and including Aylesbury, Chesham, Amersham, Chalfont, High Wycombe and Wokingham.
